The Zumtobel Group, the world’s leading supplier of integrated lighting solutions, was looking for groundbreaking new ideas in the field of open architecture. They hired us to work with Dutch design studio one/one on an international research project.

Global networking has given rise to all sorts of new architectural models and concepts: 3D-printed buildings, WikiHouses, downloadable building plans, financing through Kickstarter, participative planning processes and more. We searched the world for pragmatic and innovative concepts, sorting our discoveries into five categories: New Financing and New Practice, Engagement, New Design Standards, Material and Virtual Hardware, and Usability.
We assembled an international team of curators, who compiled our findings from around the globe and subjected them to critical examination. We then launched a blog featuring a selection of 64 projects, which were later publicized at a series of seven pop-up conferences.
