About Exhibitions

Exhibiting the Exhibition, at the Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden, explored exhibiting as a cultural technology. From Renaissance-era cabinets of curiosities to today’s curatorial situation, it took in works of art, museum displays, picture frames and historical catalogs. The catalog we designed for it was awarded the Deutsche Designer Club’s Gute Gestaltung award for 2019.

Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden About Exhibitions 2019

Drawing on the curators’ extensive research, we decided to follow the example of the designers of Europe’s earliest exhibition catalogs: We asked a crew of artists to draw each object in the exhibition. With unflashy typography, and printed in just two colors, the catalog portrays the art of exhibiting as an opportunity to construct a new picture.
