Allesandersplatz

For each of STATISTA’s projects, we designed a »monument« of architectural elements inspired by the Alexanderplatz area. The title Allesandersplatz – »everything-different square« – refers to the area’s in-betweenness. It’s like a child left behind at the ball pit, lost between postmodernity and capitalist trash. Everyday system font Brush Script meets super fat Druk and Moskau Grotesk. In deference to the diversity and societal relevance of the projects’ content, we decided to keep things monochrome. Our monuments served as design toolboxes for the projects’ websites, a conference held during Berlin Art Week and a book documenting the whole adventure.

The area around the former House of Statistics of the GDR needed a signage system. Together with the team of ZK/U we upcycled several doors of the former offices of the building into a wayfinding system and an information guide for the numerous co-creation workshops. The doors were painted with iron paint. We created design templates for the local producion team to print up-to-date schedules and information on magnetic paper sheets that stuck on the surfaces.

Together with Sandy Kaltenborn, Steffen Schuhmann from anschlaege.de created an artistic installation. A frieze based on that of the former Teacher’s House. The drawings address the themes of gentrification, urban development politics and urban citizenship.
