A Journey through the Centuries

Universities are deeply inscribed in European history. Although Berlin’s universities appear comparatively late in this narrative, in many respects they conform to the European pattern. From their 18th-century forerunners, the Academy of Sciences and the Charité Hospital, to today’s international institutions, universities have had a deci­sive influence on the city’s appearance.

  • The roots of Berlin’s oldest university, today’s Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, date back to the mid-1700s. Combining functionality with aspirations to prestige, Berlin’s architectures of learning tell tales of self-confidence and power, of hubris, destruction and new beginnings, demonstrating how institutions can preserve rich traditions while also pursuing new ideas.
