A Dialogue between Past and Present

The Francke Foundations occupy a historic ensemble of stately Baroque buildings in the heart of the city of Halle. In 1990, after decades of neglect, those buildings had fallen into a state of severe disrepair; photographs from the period show peeling stucco, crumbling masonry and boarded-up windows. Yet today, not a trace of decay can be seen. In 2020, that transformation was the subject of an outdoor exhibition.

  • Simple concept, dramatic effect: Eight monumental photographic banners positioned throughout the campus, along with 42 smaller images, vividly illustrated how much had changed over the past 30 years. These were accompanied by quotes from former residents, students and employees, revealing the depth of their personal ties to the foundations and their spirit.

  • Most of the funds for the restoration were provided by concerned citizens. By 2020, the work of saving the historic buildings from ruin was almost complete, showing that even the seemingly impossible can be accomplished when people work together.
